Casing Jack

CLIENT CHALLENGE

A UK Oil & Gas operator was performing an ESP completion change out on a long reach well in the Southern UK land sector and was concerned that the hoist on the workover rig did not have enough strength to unseat the packer. ITC was contacted to see if their casing jack could be quickly deployed for this part of the operation.

ITC SOLUTION

The ITC casing jack is capable of a 500T pull which was far in excess of the estimated unseating force (~110T). Although the workover rig hoist did not have sufficient strength to unseat the packer it was considered that the floor could support this pull. ITC’s engineering department reviewed the rig substructure and determined the necessary support beams to transfer the load.
The equipment was needed onsite quickly and sourcing the appropriate bushing and slips in the required time frame was not possible, ITC solution was to remove the integrated back-saver system for the slips and use the top plates from a wellhead tension table to support the rig pipe elevators.
In addition, the client wanted to use the rigs HPU to operate the jack, this required a new control stand to be made to interface with the HPU. A pressure limiting circuit was also included to avoid potentially overloading the rig substructure.

THE RESULTS

The casing jack was “hotshot” deployed and returned after the client successfully unseated the packer, ready for the workover rig to recover the completion, within 3 days. The client was very pleased with the quick preparation and inventive approach.
